Music Departments

WHRW is a free format radio station. This means, no one tells WHRW jocks what to play. There is no set playlist by the management. The jock, however, could set up his/her own playlist though (for example, an hour of Frank Zappa, and an hour and a half of requests). WHRW apprenti join music departments based on their musical tastes. Being a member of a music department does not mean that you have to play music for that department. For example, I'm a member of the classical department, but I play Phish on occasion. Music Departments also help listeners choose shows that they want to hear. These are the various departments we have:

POP - Department for all styles of rock and most variations of rock that can often be found in most popular music. Pop is Pop spelled backwards. Indie Pop, Grunge, Classic Rock, Metal,... It's all covered here! HERITAGE - The department that presents music of Black expression, encompassing the sounds of Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae, Deep Funk, Soul Classics, Disco, and other forms of African American and Black Heritage. FOLK - If you hear banjos, if you hear blues, if you hear cajuns with funky hairdos, if you hear bagpipes, and think it's a joke, you're probably right because you are listening to Folk.
JAZZ - The WHRW Jazz Department is committed to upholding what John Coltrane believed -- "The music has to speak for itself" -- Experience diverse shows and explore the true breadth of Jazz. SPACE - Focuses upon the styles of electronica, trance, techno, and other forms of dance and spacey music. CLASSICAL - When you listen to a Classical show, you'd better get ready to jam with the greatest of all time. These people play all of your favorites, college style.
RADIO PATRIA - A mixture of Tropical-Carribean music with it's influences from the jazz spectrum to typical island and Latin American rhythms will be provided. NEWS (CAMPUS CHRONICLES) - From the Northern skies to the East Lounge, and the West Coast to the Station Lobby... "cause let's face it, you don't read the Times." PUBLIC AFFAIRS (PA) - Dedicated to educating the public both on and off campus by allowing local groups to reach the public through the airing of Public Affairs Programming.
RADIO THEATRE - The WHRW Radio Theatre Department is committed to upholding what ODB believed -- "Wu Tang is for the children" -- The new variety departmen has radio dramas, games, shows, and comedy skits. As long as it's original, we'll do it and like it. SPECIALTY - Long running shows at WHRW that are listener favorites. You'll find Gospel Time! and The European Ethnic Melodies Show here, among other shows.
